Dentures are a fantastic way to replace a mouth full of missing teeth because they restore so much of your ability to eat and speak normally. They’re customized to fit like a glove and rely on a close suction against your gummy alveolar ridges to stay in place. However, in time your jawbone and mouth will start to change shape after tooth loss which can lead to loose dentures. Fortunately, you can keep them secure with denture adhesive. Keep reading to learn more about why you might need it and how to use it!

What is Denture Adhesive?

Essentially, denture adhesive helps temporarily attach your dentures to your gums. It can come in many forms such as creams, powders, and pastes. This glue both increases stability and forms a seal to prevent unwanted particles from getting trapped in the space between your gums and false teeth.

When Should I Use Denture Adhesive?

In a perfect world, your dentures would ideally always fit well, and you would never need an adherent. In the real world, though, certain factors make it harder for your prosthetics to stay put and so they need some extra assistance. You might want to consider using it if you experience:

  • Dry mouth. Sufficient saliva is necessary for your dentures to attach via suction. Older adults or those taking certain medications are prone to dry mouth and may require adhesive for their false teeth to remain in their mouths.
  • Jawbone structural changes. Your body reabsorbs bone mass from your jaw when you lose teeth which causes it to deteriorate. In time, it morphs enough that your dentures don’t fit like they once did, and additional help is necessary.
  • Facial strain. People who use their mouths frequently like public speakers, singers, musicians, and teachers are more likely to need the added stability.

How Do I Use Denture Adhesive?

Fortunately, applying denture adhesive is a simple process that typically includes the following steps:

  • Brushing your dentures. You’ll want to start with clean dentures for them to stick to your gums. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to brush or rinse them.
  • Applying the adhesive. Follow the instructions provided on the product packaging to know exactly how it’s intended to be used. It will vary slightly depending on what kind you’re using.
  • Place your dentures. Immediately after adding the adhesive, carefully position your dentures and hold them in place for a few seconds to allow the bond to form.

With denture adhesive, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing your dentures are more likely to stay where they should!
