3 Tips for Keeping Dentures White & Bright

It’s understandable for the average person to assume that dentures constantly stay white and bright. After all, they’re artificial, which means they don’t have the enamel and other materials of natural teeth. Surely, then, dentures don’t yellow and darken like the genuine article?

Unfortunately, dentures can and do experience staining. However, as with real teeth, there are ways to make them clean and pristine again. To learn more about these methods, read the following three tips to whiten dentures and avoid denture stains!

Avoid Staining

One thing you can do to keep dentures stain-free is to avoid highly colorful foods and drinks. Such items — coffee, wine, berries, tomato sauce, etc. — will stain your dentures. Eating them less frequently will help keep them from ruining the white coloration of your dentures.

Of course, no one expects you to stay away from these foods all the time. If you indulge in stain-causing food or drink, just give your dentures a quick rinse or brush soon after.

Practice Daily, At-Home Cleaning

The most obvious way to keep your dentures white and stain-free is to clean them daily. Before bed, remove your dentures from your mouth and rinse them to wash away debris or food particles. Afterward, gently brush them with a denture brush or soft-bristled toothbrush. Your dentist may be able to suggest a low-abrasive toothpaste to use in this process.

Another home-cleaning method would be to use a non-abrasive denture cleaner. According to the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, an overnight soak in denture cleaner will help loosen and remove stains. First, though, talk to your dentist about at-home cleaning methods or switching your cleaning solutions. More importantly, only use solutions approved by accredited dental associations, as most at-home teeth-whitening solutions aren’t safe for dentures.

Consider Professional Whitening

If all else fails, you can always look into getting your dentures cleaned by your dentist. A professional denture cleaning can remove surface stains and polish your dentures to make them look new. Plus, unlike at-home methods, it should only take a few minutes with their cleaning and polishing products.

Unless otherwise recommended by your dentist, you should only need professional cleaning for your dentures about twice a year.
