While they can thrive for many years, it’s not unusual for a crown to lose its bond with the tooth over time. If you have lost a dental crown, don’t panic. While it is a dental emergency, it isn’t as severe as a knocked-out tooth, but that doesn’t mean you should wait to see your dentist. Here are 4 steps you should take to protect your tooth until your appointment.

1. Assess the Situation

You’ll want to inspect your mouth to determine if you require immediate dental attention or not. If you can find your crown, be sure to hold on to it and call your dentist. They may advise you to use a temporary denture adhesive to secure it until your appointment. Don’t worry if you can’t find the crown because your dentist can make a replacement. Most lost restorations can wait a day or two for treatment; however, if you experience any of the following situations, you need to see your dentist right away:

Tooth or crown has a jagged edge that can injure your soft tissues or tongue.

You’re in significant pain.

The crown presents a choking hazard.

The crown can’t be removed in its entirety.

2. Keep Your Tooth Clean

Brushing and flossing are more important than ever if a tooth has lost its protective cap. Besides brushing your teeth twice per day and flossing nightly, use a salt and water rinse 3-4 times throughout the day. It will keep your mouth clean while also reducing inflammation and pain.

3. Manage Any Discomfort

Not all teeth that lose their crowns cause pain but don’t be surprised if you experience some minor discomfort. You can manage it using an over-the-counter pain reliever. You can also apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth to numb the area.

4. Avoid Certain Foods

Your tooth will be vulnerable to sensitivity and additional damage until after it has been repaired. You’ll want to avoid chewing with the tooth and anything that might cause discomfort, like hot or cold foods and drinks. It’s also a good idea to skip sticky or chewy foods. You may want to choose softer foods to reduce the likeliness of any pain or injury to the tooth.

Contact Your Dentist Right Away

A lost crown can be a stressful situation, but your dentist will be by your side. If you lose a crown, contact your emergency dentist right away, so you can get back to enjoying your day quickly.

About Dr. Derek Metzger

Dr. Metzger earned his dental degree at the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and has continued his training in general dentistry and dental implants.
